Daisy Coleman: The Pain of Rape

Daisy Coleman, a sexual attack survivor at 14, has been discovered dead. She has reportedly perished by suicide, her grieving mum said. Daisy was one of two teen rape survivors whose tale was the topic of the Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy in 2016. Daisy Coleman turned 23 this year.

Her mum, Melinda Moeller Coleman wrote on Facebook: “My daughter Catherine Daisy Coleman committed suicide tonight. If you saw crazy / messages and posts it was because I phoned the police to check on her.” She also verified the disastrous news to TMZ and told police that she discovered her daughter’s corpse. “She was my best friend and incredible daughter … I wish I could have taken the pain from her! She never recovered from what those boys did to her and it’s just not acceptable. My baby girl is gone,” the mum further wrote.

Daisy, An Advocate

Daisy became an advocate for the sexual attack survivors after her story made headlines back in 2012. She was just 14 when she was allegedly raped at a party in Maryville, Missouri, by a 17-year-old boy, Matthew Barnett. The whole incident was reportedly recorded by another boy on his mobile.

Barnett, the grandson of a former Republican state representative, had allegedly raped her and left her outside in chilling temperatures. He was later arrested and accused of felony sexual attack, which was later dropped. He was then charged with a minor case of endangerment of a minor.

This is Daisy Coleman. She was raped at the age of 14 in 2012 at a house party. Her rapist later drove her home and left her laying on her front porch in a t-shirt and sweatpants overnight in sub-zero temperatures until her mum discovered her there the following morning. She was part of a portrait about rape and subsequent bullying in a Netflix documentary named “Audrie & Daisy”. Audrie Pott, another separate rape victim, took her life days after her assault. DAYS.

Yesterday (4 August 2020) Daisy was found to have died by suicide. Which doesn’t look like the right word anymore. Who she was and would have become was murdered in 2012 at the age of 14. It took 8yrs for Daisy Colemans’ rapist to murder her. And make no error every event that led to today was set in motion on that night. He killed that girl not physically, but by stealing what she was. And he got away with it.
