Lauren’s friends called the police, who came and surveyed her apartment. Nothing looked extraordinary at first but her vehicle was still parked out front and her bag and belongings were in her apartment.
Her friends notified police that over the past year Lauren was distressed and suspected she was being watched. She also believed someone had been in her apartment while she was gone because she saw things would have moved around.
Police were worried and called in a forensic team to survey the apartment. While searching, they used luminol in the bathroom. The tub and sink lit up, which suggested there was a big amount of blood there at one point.
During the search, officers started noticing a bad fragrance coming from somewhere outside. After pursuing it, it led them to the dumpster outside the complex, and they discovered a human torso. They instantly knew it likely belonged to Lauren.
While the search and find were ongoing, Stephen McDaniel, the classmate, and neighbor of Lauren Giddings started speaking with a news reporter outside the complex. His weird attitude during the interview alerted authorities to take a closer look at him.
His apartment was scoured and police found out a master key to all the apartments in the complex. They also discovered a key to Lauren’s apartment. After looking on his computer, police discovered tons more evidence. They found out McDaniel was obsessed with Lauren. Stephen would always look at her social media profiles while also viewing severe pornography. He also had deleted a video of him glancing into her windows for hours and watching her.
He eventually admitted to police that he broke into her apartment around 4:30 a.m. and Stephen contended to have had on a mask. During his battle with her, she ripped his mask off and saw his face, so he had to murder her. He contended to have suffocated her. Then, put her corpse in the bathtub. He left it there and came back later and after returning dismembered her corpse. He contended to have dumped the remaining body parts around town in numerous trashcans/dumpsters but aside from the torso, her remains were never discovered.

While being interviewed by a regional news station McDaniel was told by the interviewer that Lauren’s torso was discovered in the dumpster at the complex. His response exhibited that he knew something about the killing. He went into shock, stumbled away, and fell into the grass. McDaniel was confident that the torso would have already been picked up and taken to the landfill but luckily something occurred and the dumpster was not yet emptied.
