The tale of the Axe Murder House in Villisca, Iowa, starts one hot summer evening in 1912. At the time, a family by the name of Moore resided there. The family consisted of the dad, JB Moore, the mum, Sarah Moore, their four kids, Herman, age 11, Katherine, age 9, Boyd, age 7, and Paul, age 5.

On the 9th of June 1912, the Moore family attended an annual Children’s Day exhibition at their regional church. After the event finished, Katherine Moore met two of her companions, Lena and Ina May Stillinger and invited them back to her home to spend the night. As the family got on to bed that night, they never presumed that they would not live to see the morning.

The next day, the neighbours glimpsed that the home was strangely silent and they became cautious when none of the kids came out to do their chores. They let themselves into the home to investigate and discovered a terrible scene inside. The parents and the six kids had all been brutally killed laps they slept in their beds. The murderer had caved in their heads with an axe until they were unrecognizable.

The police were instantly called and the disastrous news travelled immediately around the small town. The story was almost too horrible to believe. While the family had been getting ready for bed that night, they had no impression that a crazed murderer was roaming in a closet with an axe, just pausing for them to fall asleep.

Bloody Axe

Sometime after midnight, he came creeping out of his hiding spot and went from room to room, killing the sleeping parents and kids. A bloody axe was discovered downstairs in the guest bedroom, where the Stillinger sisters had been sleeping.

After the killings, the murderer went around covering all of the victims’ faces with sheets or clothing. He also wrapped all of the windows and mirrors in the home. He kept up in the home for a while, made himself a sandwich, then fled into the night.

Unfortunately, the murderer left very few indications and the police had slight to go on. In the end, the person who committed the dreadful crime was never discovered and today, the case of the Villisca Axe Murders stays a mystery.

Strange Noises

Over the years, the Murder House had many holders and tenants. In the 1930s, a youthful couple were living in the house. The wife started hearing noises during the night and had the feeling that there was someone in the home. One night, she waked up to see the shadowy figure of a man clenching an axe standing at the foot of her bed. She became frantic and her husband had to stay awake and watch over her at night so that she could get some nap.

In 1960

In the 1960s, the Murder House was rented by a wedded couple with two daughters. The girls would frequently be roused in the night by the noises of kids moaning and crying. Sometimes, they found their clothes strewn about their bedroom, hanging from the mirrors and windows. The girls shared their occurrences with their parents, but they were met with mistrust. One evening, their dad was sitting at the kitchen table sharpening his pocketknife. Unexpectedly, the knife flew out of his hand and stabbed him in the arm. That very night, he said his family to pack their stuff and they moved out.

In 1994 a husband and wife bought the popular Villisca Axe Murder House and restored it to the circumstance it was in at the time of the killings. According to regional people, the ghosts of the victims and the murderer still stay in the house.

Ghostly footsteps have been listened to walking up the stairs that steer to the bedrooms. The same stairs the murderer walked up back in 1912. There have been sightings of 2 ghostly little girls in white clothes in one bedroom. People who sleep in this room tell they are roused during the night by the spirit of a man holding an ax standing at the foot of their bed.
